For a lot of people, Costco is their go-to store. For anyone who loves buying items in bulk, this retail giant is a haven.
However, bigger isn’t always better. Although Costco is the ideal marketplace for some people, others might also find themselves overspending after a trip to the store. Plus, there are items that sell cheaper in other supermarkets than the big warehouses.
To save some money and a headache, here are 7 things you should never buy at Costco.
Costco sells diapers in bulk, starting at $29.99 for a 174-piece pack.
However, buying diapers in bulk can be a bad thing.
Since babies grow quickly, they can easily grow out of a size. Meaning you’ll be left with a lot of leftover diapers that you may not be able to use anymore. This means you’re throwing away money.
Fruits And Vegetables
There is an important reason why you shouldn’t buy fruits and vegetables from the retail giant.
The quantities are too large for an average-sized family. That means you won’t be able to consume them and chances are they’ll just spoil.
Plus, the cost per unit may be higher than your local supermarket. Instead of paying more than $15 for a 12 pack of apples (which makes them $1.25 each), you can get the same quality for a much lower price at your local grocery store.
Stocking up on sodas on your visit at Costco may not be a good idea, either.
There are a lot of supermarkets who offer almost constant deals on Pepsi and Coca Cola products. If you use a coupon at the grocery store, you can save a lot more on your favorite drinks.
You can buy a box of two to three dozens eggs at Costco. But should you really make that purchase?
Eggs have a shelf life of three to five weeks so if you buy them in bulk, you would need to eat a lot of eggs on a daily basis.
Unless you’re cooking up omelets for a party or a big crowd, it’s more ideal to buy a dozen at the supermarket.
Costco is not the best place to buy rice.
You can get rice from Asian supermarkets for 35 percent less. The same amount of rice that you can get from Costco for $40 may just be $20 or cheaper at a smaller store.
The prices of the cereals from Costco are not terrible. However, a lot of drug stores and supermarkets offer excellent deals on the same brands, especially if you use coupons with a sale.
Plus, you can get additional coupons for certain products. If you stack up on coupons, you could even get a box (or two) for free.
Instead of buying a three-pack of shampoo at Costco, take a look at a Sunday paper.
When shopping at Costco, don’t just pick up items that catch your eye. Instead, be a smart shopper and look for the items at your local supermarket and check out coupons from your Sunday paper for more savings before buying them in bulk and possibly paying more.
